SAN RAFAEL, California - An intoxicated driver with no license hit and injured a San Rafael police officer on Wednesday evening.

All over eleven p.m. on Wednesday, Officer Christopher Sweeney parked his bike at a DUI checkpoint along with other officers. A close by checkpoint was taking position just a handful of blocks down at Irwin and Fifth Avenue.

All-around that time, a driver heading northbound on Irwin stopped his Ford Explorer near 3rd Avenue and started to drive in reverse in an attempt to stay clear of the checkpoint. The driver hit Sweeney and left him with many injuries.

The driver, Guillermo Garcia Rodriguez, 43, was arrested by other officers on suspicion of DUI.

Police did not get Garcia Rodriguez's blood alcohol subject material stage but argued that he appeared to be intoxicated. Officers also found out he was driving with out a license.

Garcia Rodriguez remained in custody as of Thanksgiving. Bail is set for $50,000.
